Hand & Grain / Sofas & sectionals

A sofa sized to the room, not to the van.

Most sofas are bought to fit a delivery van. Ours are drawn to fit the wall, the door, the lift and the way your family actually sits. Four families below; every one is made to your measurement.

The method

How we size a sofa to a room

We start from three numbers and one habit. The numbers are the clear wall length, the distance from the wall to the coffee table, and the width of the narrowest opening the piece must pass through. The habit is how you sit — upright and reading, or sideways with your legs over the arm.

From there we set seat height and seat depth, decide whether the arms can be slim, and work out whether the piece needs to come apart into two modules to get up your stairs. A sofa that does not fit the room is a sofa that will be sold in three years.

Send us a plan and we will send back a drawing with the numbers on it, before you commit to anything.

What we setRange we buildWhy it matters
Seat height16–19 inEasier rise for elders; deeper for lounging
Seat depth22–28 in22 for upright sitting, 26+ for reclining
Arm width4–10 inSlim arms buy back seating in tight rooms
Back height28–34 inAbove 30 in reads formal; below 28 reads lounge
Module split2–4 piecesAnything over 2.2 m usually needs a split
Leg clearance4–7 inRoom for a robot vacuum, and it reads lighter

Typical build ranges. Final dimensions are fixed on your drawing, not on this table.

01

The four families

Named, not numbered. Each family has a fixed frame logic and a set of dimensions we build to — inside that, everything is yours: length, depth, arm, fabric, filling.

Maitri — beige L-shaped sectional with a chaise

Maitri

Modular

The softest of the four. Deep, low and modular, with a chaise that can move to either end and an ottoman that doubles as a coffee table when you put a tray on it.

Long run

Built for a big wall and a big family. Adjustable headrests on every seat, a firm seat that does not sink, and timber legs left showing so the run does not read heavy.

Theeram

Curved

The one people photograph. A curved run with a rolled chaise, built on a curved frame rather than a bent one — which is why the curve holds its line in the tenth year.

Utsav

Formal

For the room you use when guests come. Tufted seat, high back, deep buttons — and a matching set of stools, so the seating grows by four without another piece of furniture.

Configurations, and what they cost you in space

Every family can be built as a straight run, an L, a U or an open-ended sectional. The drawing is where we work out which one your room will forgive.

  • Two, three and four seaters — the straight run, for a wall with nothing else on it
  • L-shape — one long run plus a return; the return sets the walking line into the room
  • Chaise — a return you can lie on; needs about 1.6 m of depth from the wall
  • Open-ended sectional — no arm at one end, so the room keeps moving past it
  • U-shape — for a conversation room, or a family that watches together
  • Modular — pieces that unhook and re-form when you move house
A rule of thumb we use. Keep at least 400 mm between the sofa's front edge and the coffee table, and 900 mm for the main walking route past it. If the numbers do not leave that much, the sofa is 200 mm too deep — and we will tell you so.
Fabrics

Sixty fabrics, seen in daylight, not on a screen

Colour on a phone is a guess. In the studio you can lay a swatch against your own cushion cover, walk it to the window, and see what the afternoon light does to it. Swatch books go home with you if you need to decide with someone else.
