Hand & Grain / Headboards & beds

The wall behind the bed, made to measure.

Most people come to us for a sofa and leave having done the bedroom too. It is the cheapest second purchase in the house: one wall, one drawing, and the room stops looking unfinished.

Two decisions, then it is done

A headboard is a small piece of furniture with two real choices in it. Everything after that is proportion, fabric and a tape measure.

Decision one

Upholstered or timber

Upholstered softens a small room, hides the wall behind it, and lets you sit up against it to read. It also lets you match the sofa exactly, which is the reason most of ours are ordered together.

Timber is cooler, quieter and easier to keep clean. In a warm room with good light, a plain teak or sheesham panel does more than any fabric. We build it from the same kiln-dried stock as our frames.

Decision two

Wall-fixed or free-standing

Wall-fixed saves about 100 mm of floor depth, and the headboard can run wider than the bed — which is what makes a bedroom look designed rather than assembled. We supply the fixings and fit it.

Free-standing needs no drilling, travels with you when you move, and can be pushed against a window wall where you would not fix anything.

02

Sizing, and the ceiling you need

We build to your mattress, not to a standard. The only hard constraint is the gap between the top of the mattress and the ceiling — a headboard that runs too high makes a room feel short.

Double1.4 m1.6 m1.2–1.4 m
Queen1.5 m1.7 m1.2–1.5 m
King1.8 m2.0 m1.3–1.6 m
Run past the bed—+0.3–0.6 m1.3–1.7 m

Headboard widths run 100–200 mm wider than the mattress so the bed reads as part of the wall.

The ceiling check. Leave at least 450 mm between the top of the headboard and the ceiling. In a 2.7 m room that caps you at about 1.5 m — which is still generous. In a 2.4 m builder floor, stay under 1.35 m.

Buttoning, piping and shape

  • Plain panel — the quietest, and the easiest to live with for a decade
  • Diamond or square buttoning — adds depth; costs an extra few days of labour
  • Channel or fluted — vertical lines that make a low room feel taller
  • Piping or flanging — a thin outline; flange is softer and reads more contemporary
  • Shaped top — curved or camel-back, drawn to your wall

Do the bedroom with the living room

Order a headboard with a sofa and we cut both from the same fabric roll, in the same run. It is the difference between a room that matches and a room that nearly matches.

  • Headboard, bed base and two bedside stools from one fabric
  • One delivery, one installation visit, one invoice
  • Fabric roll reserved across both pieces, so dye lots agree
  • Bench at the bed end, upholstered to match the sofa seat
